ED Weggemans, pictured, has been appointed as managing director of South Pacific Brewery Ltd.
Weggemans replaced Stan Joyce, who retired at the end of August.
Prior to joining SP Brewery, Weggemans was managing director of Surinaamse Brouwerij NV – a Heineken operating company in Suriname, South America – since January 2016.
During his tenure in Suriname, he led the brewery during a severe economic crisis in that country but maintained the company’s profitability and volume through assertive pricing and marketing strategies.
Weggemans focused on the development of the leadership team at the Surinaamse Brouwerij NV by setting a clear new mission, vision and strategy and ensuring a leap forward on issues such as accountability and collaboration.
Weggemans joined Heineken Netherlands in 1990 in on trade sales and then moved to Heineken Export in 1994 first in Central Europe and then as general manager for Heineken Taiwan from 1997 to 2000.
He then returned to Amsterdam as international on-premise trade manager at corporate marketing before taking up increasingly senior commercial roles in West Africa, Dubai and then Nigeria.
From 2012 to 2016, he was general manager for Europe Export and Global Duty Free before taking up his next role in Suriname.
“I would like to thank (Stan) Joyce, for his significant contribution to SP Brewery. Stan and the SP team have built a leading business we have today,” he said.
“Stan has left a legacy with some big shoes to fill and I am confident that with the support from my employees, SP Brewery will continue to strive and dominate this market and we will accomplish many great things to come.”
Weggemans has had the opportunity to visit the four regions of PNG last month to meet SPB staff and valued customers.
Joyce, although now retired, will still serve as an independent director on SP Brewery’s board.
