NATIONAL welterweight champion Douglas Walo received K3,000 worth of training gear last month from Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour as he steps up preparations for Friday’s bouts.
The support also includes rental accommodation that will be covered by Seymour as Walo prepares for the Oceania Fights Promotions-organised fights.
While acknowledging the support from his local MP, Walo said he was eager to continue training while reviving the sport in Morobe.
“This is a big boost for me and it shows that even my member and people back in Morobe are behind me,” he said.
“This is special for me because no-one has ever really came in like this and shown this much support.
“This support really helps with my training and I feel like this has raised the standard in which I can train and continue my boxing career.
“The sponsorship is timely because it’s been quite hard for people to support themselves.
“Boxing is not new to Morobe and I’m sure we can have a few more fighters come out from the province and make a name for themselves.
“My trainer Kevin Baki has been supportive throughout my career and with him, I want to take back boxing to Salamaua in Huon Gulf, Morobe.”
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Walo said it was not an excuse for boxers to lose focus because they could train in isolation.
