A MAJOR Water and Sanitation Hygiene (Wash) project in Nawaeb, Morobe, has been boosted with an additional K25,000 funding by Nawaeb MP Kennedy Wenge.
The five-year Wash project was funded by the European Union and supported by Unicef.
Wenge provided the funding to World Vision, the Wwask project’s implementing partner supporting the Nawaeb development authority to develop a plan to implement the project.
Unicef commended the administration’s commitment to improving Wash services in Nawaeb.
“As a major partner supporting EU implement this project, Unicef lauds Wenge whose support will contribute to improving Wash services in Nawaeb that are essential for the survival and development of children, women and communities,” Unicef acting representative Judith Bruno said.
“Without the fulfilment of these basic needs, the lives of children and communities are at risk.
“In the same vein, Unicef appreciates the generous funding support provided by the EU for the overall Wash project in four districts in Papua New Guinea including Nawaeb.”
The project, with its rural focus, now in phase two involves the construction of improved Wash facilities, implementation of awareness campaigns, promotion of hygiene activities and capacity building in the four districts – Nawaeb, Bougainville Central (Autonomous Region of Bougainville), Mt Hagen Central (Western Highlands) and Goroka (Eastern Highlands).
The European Union was committed to Wash improvement worldwide and has been supporting access to clean water and sanitation in Papua New Guinea through rural water supply
and sanitation projects since the 1990s.
These projects gave access to safe water and sanitation services to over 200,000 people especially in remote areas.
The EU was one of the largest humanitarian donors of Wash assistance worldwide. It contributes around EUR 200 million (K754.4m) each year to ensure access to sufficient and safe water.
