Western Pacific University

Letters

MANY people supported the government’s announcement several years ago to build the new Western Pacific University at Ialibu, in Southern Highlands.
Those who supported the new university saw it as an opportunity to make university spaces available to more of our children when there was a growing number of grade 12 leavers who could not enroll in the existing six universities.
Some people felt that Western Pacific University was a waste of money during tough economic times and they believed that it was better to spend the money to upgrade the existing universities.
So when will Western Pacific University open?
Western Pacific University’s website, wpu.ac.pg, has the following information under the ‘admissions’ tab: “The Western Pacific University admission processes and applications for admission to many undergraduate programmes will be available on the website in 2018 for the academic year 2019.”
The website says this information was “written on 20 June 2016”.
Under the ‘Academic programmes’ tab the website posts the following information: “All faculties and departments will be uploaded into the website in 2018.”
The website says this information was “written on 26 June 2016”.
It is almost the end of 2018 and there is no further information on the website about programmes and enrolment.
Has the construction of Western Pacific University been completed and is it ready to enroll students next year as advertised on its website?
Can someone in the government update the public about the status of the new university?
Students, parents and the public are interested to know about the new university.
