THE death of a youth along the Wirui Cathedral Road in East Sepik last Sunday night, saw Wewak town brought to a standstill on Monday morning.
Acting Deputy Comm of Police (DCP), operations, Donald Yamasombi confirmed the death and said police came upon a group of youths who were harassing a security firm driver.
“A local security company was on a pick-up run (at about 5pm),” he said.
“It came to a location near the Catholic mission where they were stopped by an intoxicated person who came to the crew’s side of the vehicle and pulled a man out.
“They fought, but the crew of the security firm realised the drunken man had a knife and pushed him away and drove off.
“However, upon their return after picking up their colleague, the security firm driver saw the same intoxicated person on the road, this time, with other youths.
“They stopped the vehicle but police happened to come by.
“In the midst of the apprehension, it was alleged that police discharged a firearm, hitting a youth.
“A roadblock was put up on Monday morning by aggrieved relatives, but provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli and local leaders in the area went in and spoke with the relatives and the road was cleared.” Yamasombi said Supt Beli has started investigations.
ESP Governor Allan Bird said the particular area was a problematic location. “This particular settlement has been a difficult and problematic location for some time, police are investigating and when the investigation is complete we will take some actions,” he said.
