A private business consultant in Wewak, East Sepik, was killed at his Wariman home by a knife-wielding man last Tuesday morning.
Provincial police commander Snr Insp Vincent Pokas said the man went to answer the door when someone knocked between 5.30am and 6am. He talked to a man and was about to close the door when he was hit from behind with
a bush knife.
The man collapsed and died.
Pokas said the suspect, whose identity was known to police, had been living with the deceased and his family for some time. The motive behind the killing was unknown.
Police were immediately informed but the suspect had fled and had been on the run since.
Police investigators are speaking to witnesses and collecting statements they need to prosecute the alleged murderer.
The deceased, whose name has been withheld by police, is of mixed Highlands and Woginara village parentage.
His body has been placed in the Wewak General Hospital morgue awaiting police investigation and for funeral arrangements to be finalised by relatives.
