Who’s stealing the medicines?

Letters

ORGANISED groups dealing with medical officers to steal medicines from hospitals and health facilities.
I came across two cases at different places and at different times.
The first incident was when an officer from Kainantu confiscated a bag of medicines while he was checking the PMV bus I was in.
No one owned up when the officer wanted to know who owned the bag. Even the bus crew had no idea who owned the bag.
The crew paid some of the penalty fees for being in possession of a large quantity of medicines without a prescription and qualified medical practitioner.
The second case was in Nipa. Two boys from Mt Hagen arranged with a local from Nipa to take medicines from the Nipa District Health Centre.
A local asked to hire the vehicle I was driving.
I asked him what his intention for hiring a vehicle was. He explained the arrangement to take the medicines from the Nipa hospital to Mendi.
I told him to cancel the deal or I would tell the police.
Why is this activity going on without detection?
What is the purpose of smuggling medicines?
Who is the mastermind behind this?
The health authority should investigate and do something to safeguard medicines in hospitals and health centres.
Medical officers who are working in dispensaries and storerooms should be monitored with CCTV cameras and security guards.
Anyone caught stealing medicines should be severely punished.
The country runs out of medicines because of theft, but the Government gets the blame
Every stakeholder in the health sector should take ownership and do things that will benefit entire population.
