Why do MPs get pay hikes?

BONUSES and pay increments are substantiated with a general increase in profit for a business or organisation. In the case of our MPs, I do not see any reason for their 7% annual pay increase. What performance indicators justify this increase? Their budgets are at a record deficit and public services such as health, education and transport, just to name a few, have not improved. Contracts and tenders for projects have been fairly overstated or awarded to dubious companies under dubious circumstances. What indication is there for the so-called increase in the standard of living of ordinary Papua New Guineans that they regularly boast about?
