HELA Wigmen chief executive Patrick Wundai has clarified that the vacancy for head coach is a club formality to improve their administrative duties.
He told The National yesterday that current coach Charlie Wabo was still with the club with the Wigmen administration taking a more serious approach to lifting their standards. “Part of being a franchise in a national rugby league competition is doing everything in a professional manner which includes the consideration of the position of head coach,” Wundai said.
“Charlie is still with the club but we are following formalities to achieve the best results for the club and administration.
“We’ve come a long way since the establishment of the club and we want to ensure that we keep to the standards that we’ve set.”
Meanwhile, Wundai said the return of Wigmen players who were part of 2021 SP Hunters squad in the Intrust Super Cup was bonus for the club in the offseason.
“We’re so proud of all the boys who were able to go down (to Queensland, Australia) and play with the Hunters this year.
“It was been a tremendous opportunity for all of them. Giving them a chance to be part of a life-changing experience is something the club is always proud of.
“They’re back in the country now, but this time they’ve returned with a feel of the game in a more conducive environment that has opened their eyes to what lies ahead.
“What they impart to the players in the Digicel Cup will help in raising the standard of the domestic game.”
