LEAGUE fans should back efforts to refurbish the premier rugby league venue in the country, Lloyd Robson Oval, in Port Moresby, says Hela Wigmen chairman Gai Pobe.

He said the Oval should be improved to host matches such as the Digicel Cup

Wigmen coaching director and former Australian Kangaroo Julian O’Neil presented K50,000 to the Port Moresby rugby league board chairman Labi Amaiu in Port Moresby on Monday.

Pobe said the money was part of the commitment by Hela Wigmen during their bid process for a spot in the Digicel Cup to make the Lloyd Robson Oval (PRL) their home ground.

“It is an investment to help maintain the country’s premier league oval,” he said.

He called on the PNGRFL, the PNG NRL Bid committee and the national government to inject funds into renovating the ground.

The presentation should see Wigmen back at PRL hosting the games for the reminder of the season.

Wigmen was stopped from using the PRL after failing to honour their commitment.

Pobe also urged Gulf Isapeas and Port Moresby Vipers to support the funding of renovations and infrastructure at the PRL.

“We have patron and the Southern Highlands Governor Anderson Agiru and chairman Jerry Kiwai who helped secure funds to meet the overdue commitment,” he said.

O’Neil urged all supporters of the game to discuss issues openly and move the game forward.

Amaiu thanked Hela Wigmen for their commitment to use the Lloyd Robson Oval as their home ground for the Digicel Cup for the remainder of the season.
