THE Hela Wigmen moved to second on the Digicel Cup ladder with a 14-6 round-seven win over Waghi Tumbe at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby yesterday.
The 2019 runners-up put on a solid attacking display with a good number of line breaks but couldn’t finish off and only managed to score 14 points.
Wigmen scored three unconverted tries through Kitron Laka, Gilmo Paul and Junior Melo.
Tumbes’s only consolation try was scored by Goi Sakipo five minutes from fulltime and was successfully converted.
Wigmen scored first through Kitron Laka off a brilliant set move by fullback Norman Brown who put him through a hole in Tumbe’s defence in the eighth minute.
After Wigmen led 4-0 at halftime, they continued their attack early on in the second stanza with Paul crossing over their second try off the back of a strong run by prop Tommy Moide.
Wigmen extended their lead to 14-0 in the 62nd minute when winger Nanduka Rame made a cross-field run to set up Melo, who scored beside the uprights.
Tumbe’s consolation try came via a line break by winger Daniel Toli who set Sakipo who scored under the posts.
Wigmen coach Charlie Wabo said he was grateful for their sixth win of the season.
“It was a satisfying win for myself and the players,” he said.
“We were physical.
“We started well and completed the game as expected.
“Our only problem now is goal kicking.
“We really need to get it right as two points are important and we can’t continue to miss conversions especially from in front of the uprights.”
Five-eighth Judah Rimbu had two conversion attempts and Laka one, but they failed on every occasion.
