HELA Wigmen chief executive officer Patrick Wundai has assured the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) that this will be the last year for the reigning champions to be based in Port Moresby.
His remarks came after a three-day visit to the stadium site in Tari and development updates from the contractor China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
Wundai said since Wigmen started competing in the Digicel Cup competition they had been based in Mendi and Port Moresby, but now with work on their home ground in Tari underway, they were looking forward to moving back to their home province.
“We’ve been out of the province and we’ve had pressure from stakeholders, including PNGNRLC, PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL),” Wundai said.
“We were being told continuously that we don’t belong in Port Moresby. It was a challenge as the franchise chief executive officer and representing the franchise owner, KPHL, I have an obligation to bring the team back to Hela where they belong.”
He said he was working closely with the contractor and was confident the side would go home in 2022.
