Years ago, Morobe’s capital, Lae, used to be the “city of potholes”. Port Moresby was the “city of roundabouts”, Eastern Highlands’ Goroka was “kol peles”, New Ireland’s Kavieng remains “bilas peles”, and Madang is still “flying fox country”. But for Port Moresby, times have changed; it is now the city of potholes. During the day, road construction workers such as the six here at Boroko’s Henao Drive, would dig drains and/or fill potholes. By the next morning, all the work was for nothing as heavy rainfall during the night had washed away the fillers. The change in weather has been attributed to climate change, a natural phenomenon as a result of man’s actions on his environment. It will get worse as the years wore on.
