POLICE in West New Britain are gearing up for the local level government elections next month.

Provincial police commander Chief Insp Samson Siguyaru said his officers had been preparing well for the upcoming elections.

They were working closely with the provincial election steering committee.

He said with the limited funding available, he was able to allocate 50 officers to provide security during the elections.

He said the provincial election committee was aware of their funding and manpower situation.

Siguyaru said he had prepared a budget submission during a meeting in Lae for the Electoral Commission to consider.

“I have initially allocated 100 officers to provide security at strategic location and election venues however with the limited funding available, I have only allocated 50 officers,” he said.

Siguyaru said he submitted a budget to the provincial election steering committee earlier however was told that the budget was demanding and was asked to reduce its strength.

He said he had to cut down on the number of officers who would be working with the election team.

“I am waiting for the provincial government and its administration to come out clear if it will further support election security,” he said.

Meanwhile, Siguyaru said logistics and security were ready and the team was looking forward to ensuring a safe and fair election in West New Britain.
