PAPUA New Guinea Football Association general secretary Pius Letenge says Women’s National Soccer League teams will be notified to resume their preparations after the PNG Sports Foundation’s (PNGSF) approval for training only.
Southern Conference semifinalists Genesis and Hekari United had called off training one month ago following PNGSF restrictions in compliance with Covid-19 measures.
With the nod given by PNGSF and the sport’s national governing body, both teams will resume training while awaiting further updates on the semifinals.
“There are still restrictions by PNGSF’s pandemic management committee (PMC) on sporting activities and competition,” Letenge said.
“However, the next update will be made after May 3 as per the directive from PMC.
“The men’s (national squad) and women’s (league) teams will be notified to resume training.”
The Port Moresby-based players in the national men’s squad had been training under coach Erickson Komeng for the opener of a three-match series before the suspension of sports.
The extension on the ban on sporting activities will lapse on May 3 and following deliberation on the Covid-19 situation in the country, further directives may be issued by PMC.
Meanwhile, PNGSF has only approved training for Women’s National Soccer League and Digicel Cup franchises as well as PNG representatives and Olympic hopefuls.
