POLICE in West Sepik have arrested a woman who claimed she accidentally shot her husband during a pig-hunting trip in Telefomin.
Telefomin police station commander Sgt Prais Kaiyus said the incident happened at Busimil on June 2.
Kaiyus said the woman, who is the fourth wife of Sebbie Akisim, had gone into the bush to check their traps for wild pigs.
Akisim loaded the rifle and passed it on to his wife so that he could work on the trap.
He later told his wife to bring the gun to him. The woman claimed in a statement to police that she tipped over something and accidentally pressed the trigger, causing her husband’s death.
Kaiyus said the woman surrendered to the village leader and she was kept by the kiaps at their village while waiting for the plane to transport her to Telefomin.
Kaiyus last week went to the village and brought the woman to the police station. Police are yet to determine whether her story is true.
He warned people in the village who have guns to use them with care.
