Woman facing 84 counts of stealing money

A WOMAN accused of stealing more than K127,000 from her employer through false pretence, money laundering, and misappropriation has been committed to stand trial in the Waigani National Court.
Magistrate Cosmas Bidar in the Waigani Committal Court committed Vavine Elizabeth Emil, 28 from Kavieng, New Ireland to stand trial after finding there was sufficient evidence against her.
“This was due to admissions made by the defendant. She said she needed the money,” Magistrate Bidar said.
Emil was charged with 84 counts of stealing by false pretence from her employer, money laundering, and misappropriation.
Emil at the time of the allegations worked as an accounts clerk with Kramer Ausenco (PNG) Ltd, a sub-consultant company to Oriental Consultant Global Co, Ltd in Port Moresby.
Between May and December last year, Emil allegedly used her username and password to make 21 invoice payments at a total of K127,788.87 to her salary account.
Emil falsely distinguished the transactions as bill payments to various businesses or companies and transferred the money from Oriental Consultant Global Company account in ANZ Bank to her account in Bank South Pacific.
From the company’s record, the payments to the different clients were all made to a single account and the account was traced and it comes under the defendant’s account name Vavine Elizabeth Emil.
Emil, when arrested on Feb 8, revealed to police that she fabricated the 21 invoices and transferred it to her personal account and used up all the money.
She was charged with 21 counts of stealing money through false pretence, 21 counts of stealing from employer, 21 counts of money laundering and 21 counts of misappropriation – a total of 84 counts.
