POLICE arrested a 57-year-old copra cutter for molesting an eight-year-old girl in East New Britain’s Gazelle yesterday.
Provincial police commander Insp Joseph Tabali said the suspected molester, from Southern Highlands’ Kagua, was arrested after a police report was lodged by the grade 1 schoolgirl’s parents.
Tabali said the girl was sitting outside her house at about 7pm with her friends telling stories when the suspect joined them and sat next to the girl.
He then pulled her pants down to her knees and put his right hand in between her legs.
“The compound was dark and the others did not see what was happening,” Tabali said.
“The girl then asked the suspect why he was putting his hands in between her legs.
“He then told her to sit and be quiet, and continued fondling her.”
The girl then got up and ran away and told her parents about it. Tabali advised parents to look after their children and to constantly monitor their whereabouts and who they mixed with.
He said children, aged between five and 10, were easy prey when they were left unattended on their own.
