THE 2015 Pride of PNG Awards for Women was launched last week in Port Moresby.

The award is an initiative of City Pharmacy Limited Group to identify and reward PNG women who have done extraordinary things to make their communities a better place to live in.

CPL chief executive officer Ravi Singh said the uniqueness of the Pride of PNG Awards for Women was that the winners were given the opportunity to pursue their dreams and continue serving their communities.

Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio, who launched the awards, urged the community to recognise the efforts of women and nominate them for the award. Present at the launch were 2014 winners Janet Pawena Yaki and Monica Paulus.

Yaki, a survivor of colorectal cancer, said women and children in PNG suffered all kinds of diseases.

She does not get paid for helping the people in the community but is happy to serve from her heart.

“We are a little known disabled group of people and CPL has helped bring us out to the public,” Janet said.

Paulus said in the past there was not enough Government support to help sustain the lives of ordinary people.

“When you ask the Government to help fund something, even if you say you’re sick and need urgent assistance, you will have to go through all kinds of stages to sign documents before the Government can assist you.”
