Some women ‘baking’ homebrew

Papua

SOME women in Ijivitari district, Northern are pretending to buy yeast for baking but make homebrew to sell to youths, MP Richard Masere says.
“Women need to be aware that they are committing these crimes and contributing to some serious issues,” he said.
“We are asking police to carry out awareness to educate women and other community members that it is a crime to be participating in such illegal activities.”
Masere wants to ban the sale of yeast in the district.
“If we can address homebrew production we should be able to avoid many social issues and deaths,” he said.
He wants to develop tourism and agriculture but law and order remains an impediment.
“If we can address law and order I believe we can see growth in the two industries,” Masere said.
“Over the next five years, I will be focusing heavily on agriculture and tourism.”
Masere has raised the issues with Police Minister Jelta Wong who indicated that he will support him.
“While we are waiting for that support to come, any help from business organisations allows us to propel our vision to address law and order sooner than later,” he said.
Masere said provincial police commander Chief Inspector Lincoln Gerari had been vocal about support for logistics and such initiatives from the business sector would ensure that the primary focus for development had progressed.
