ONE of the biggest events earmarked for the new year is the 2014 National Women’s Rugby Sevens championship.

The tournament, the first time such an event will be held for women, will be staged from March 1-2, at the Monier Rugby Park, Port Moresby.

PNG Rugby Football Union training and education manager Sailosi Druma said the union has already sent out the 2014 calendars to all affiliated unions around the country to notify them about this event.

“The tournament will be run separately from the men’s,” Druma said.

“With only Capital Rugby Union and Madang having a women’s competition, we have included a combined team from the Highlands and Momase and also the Steamship Womens team to compliment the Madang side and the six CRU club teams.”

The championships will also include the Under 15s and Under 19s from the NCD School Rugby programme.

From the championships, a 15-member squad will be selected to prepare for the 2014 Hong Kong Women’s Rugby Sevens.

Druma said the women’s 2014 rugby programme would start with the popular Hong Kong Sevens.

The PNG squad will go into camp on March 3.

The Hong Kong Women’s Rugby 2014 will be held from March 27–28 March.

Eleven countries have been slotted in the tournament with a 12th country to be confirmed before the full draw is announced.

The 11 countries are Singapore, South Africa, Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, China, Kazakhstan, France, Brazil, Japan and PNG.
