NEARLY 60 clubs have kicked-off round 1 games of the annual Port Moresby Women’s Basketball League last weekend, league executive Gosa Jack says.
The competition went into its round two over the weekend at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Complex in Port Moresby with a total of 59 registered clubs competing in nine divisions.
“We are now into our round two of the 2024 Port Moresby Women’s Basketball League,” Jack said.
“Last weekend, we started off our round one normal games after successfully completing five weeks of preseason games and three weeks of on and off games.
“We decided to do that just to give more time to interested teams who were willing to participate and also register their teams. We have nine divisions, starting from Under-8 all the way up to U18. So we have in total eight clubs.
“Each clubs field a team in each of these divisions. For the juniors this year we registered 59 teams, so every weekend you come to watch the games you’ll see 500-600 kids are here playing.
Jack said they were creating opportunities for children and adults.
“They got the opportunity to come out here and play the game,” Jack said.
“The targeted area is on the juniors especially. At this level it’s more important that we create an avenue for them to learn the game, play the game and master the game going forward.
“By doing so, we are helping the federation grow the standard of the sport in the country going forward.
“So that’s what we want to see, we want to see more juniors coming out here and expose their talents.”
