A SETTLEMENT in National Capital District is in the development stages to be transformed into a suburb under the “settlement to suburb” programme.
“We launched that settlement and into upgrading 9-Mile Quarry,” NCD Governor Powes Parkop told The National.
“We did the survey, subdivisions, created allotments and all the titles to the allotments have been graded and now we are starting to build the infrastructure and move the settlers to properly align to the allotments.”
Parkop said preparations were underway prior to the launching by the prime minster last July.
“We were doing the preparations, getting data, getting the community to cooperate and work with us,” he said.
“After the launching, we started to bring the physical work.
“We are now starting to build infrastructure and move settlers to properly align to the allotments.
“The 9-Mile Rouna Quarry settlement has been transformed with over 326 land allotments being created.”
Parkop said an estimated 50 acres (20 hectares) of land is being transformed.
Countering the perception that this project indulges in free titles being given, NCDC’s strategic and urban planning manager Kemo Pepena Guise said a cost component of K40,000 had been imposed on each title or allotment recipient.
“Phase one will see the construction of 290 residential allotments, three commercial areas, a school, a clinic and a police station,” Guise said.
In addition, NCDC is also complementing the suburb project with the construction and sealing of four major trunk roads in the area. Other utility services such as water supply and power will be connected.
