AN international construction company worker was fined K200 by the Mt Hagen district court on Wednesday for assaulting his expatriate supervisor.
Magistrate Lydia Karre fined Philip Rudi after he admitted to assaulting Indian national Danda Sriniuivasarao.
According to police investigations, Essar Construction Company’s Sriniuivasarao called Rudi into his office on Tuesday to find out why the latter was absent from work last Monday.
After the explanation, Rudi returned to work and when Sriniuivasarao arrived at the work site (Kagamuga Airport), the former slapped the latter hard on the head. Sriniuivasarao was left helpless in front of other site workers.
Police prosecutor Sam Nili applied to the court asking for the maximum penalty to be imposed.
Nili said Sriniuivasarao was from another country and that he came to help develop the province.
“Such an attack on an expatriate portrayed a bad image on the province and the country as a whole,” he said.
“There are avenues available to address problems and for one to assault another was not a proper way.”
Karre then fined Rudi K200 in default a month’s jail in Baisu.
