Works: Plans for upgrade of Madang’s Tapo crossing

THE crossing at Tapo in Madang where two police officers died last year after their vehicle was swept away the flooded rover will be repaired next year, an official says.
National Works Department director in Madang Andrew Kendaura said it was one of the seven bridges earmarked for rehabilitation next year, funded by an international donor.
Two police officers died there one year ago today when their vehicle was swept off the crossing by the strong current.
Senior Constable Willie Marita and Constable Clement Villau died while their colleague Constable Justine Baugen who was travelling with them survived.
Works Secretary David Wereh during a visit to Madang in June said most bridges along the Madang-Lae Highway needed maintenance.
Others need to be rebuilt after collapsing.
Wereh said 12 bridges were selected for the rehabilitation work, with seven including Tapo were on the Ramu Madang highway.
Meanwhile work on the Banab bridge construction is progressing.
JV PNG Construction engaged for the work hopes to complete it quickly so that people can use it.
