SURVIVING World War Two veteran Sgt Ben Moide, 83, has commissioned PNG writer Lahui Ako to write his autobiography.
Mr Moide confirmed this on Tuesday to counter claims that another PNG writer, Maclaren Hiari, was ready to publish Mr Moide’s autobiography titled A Green Shadow – a biography of PN67 Steven Benjamin Moide, MBE OBE, retired sergeant with the Papua Infantry Battalion (PIB) during 1940-46.
Mr Hiari claimed that Mr Moide had asked him on June 11, 1999, at his Waigani home to write his biography.
Mr Moide recalled his initial contact with Mr Hiari in 1990, however, he said because Mr Hiari had not contacted him again in the last 10 years, he decided to ask Mr Ako to write his biography.
“The good Lord will take me away sooner or later,” Mr Moide said.
“Who will then be there to write about me?
“I might not live to see the published book.
“After waiting in vain for Mr Hiari to come and tell me about the progress of the book, I asked Lahui to write about me,” the veteran said.
Mr Moide said he had turned down offers from many foreign writers to tell his life story.
If all goes as planned, the book should be launched during next year’s Remembrance Day.
