SOUTHERN Highlands provincial sports officer Benson Yabo has commended the consortium headed by Governor William Powi and Works Minister Francis Awesa for getting the Mendi Muruks back into the 2013 Digicel Cup.
The Muruks were given the cold shoulder by the PNGNRL board after failing to meet requirements for the new season.
But Powi and Awesa fought vigorously to have the pride of their province reinstated into the toughest rugby league competition in the country.
Yabo thanked PNGNRFL board chairman Sudhir Guru and his executive officer, Hubert Warupi for giving a second chance to the Muruks.
He said the Mendi Muruks had an original home-ground, the Tente Oval, which would be shared with the neighbouring Hela Wigmen.
That will mean rugby league fans will have a Digicel Cup match every weekend in Mendi. The province has not hosted a Digicel Cup match for the past 15 years.
Yabo thanked former Mendi MP Pastor Isaac Joseph, former governor and now Hela Governor Anderson Agiru for making funds available to upgrade Tente Oval into one of the best rugby league venues in the country.
