NEW South Wales Young Achievers coach Col Wright has hailed their tour of Papua New Guinea a success following the Under-16 side’s matches in Popondetta, Northern, and Port Moresby.
Wright said the tour was self-funded as they went out of their way to deliver initiatives in the country. “It was good to be in Popondetta for several days with plans to have a mutual understanding and partnership with Popondetta Rugby League,” he said.
“We thank the Northern Motel management for the accommodation and hospitality.
“This was a real experience for all the players who really enjoyed it with friendly smiles everywhere we went.”
President Peter Oresi said the league was serious about the partnership to help develop the competition in the province for young players to be recognised through the initiative.
He said the tour was an eye-opener for the visitors and the league, and it was something that they were looking forward to again next year.
“We are going to raise funds but we need the provincial government and corporate sector to support our trip to New South Wales,” Oresi said. “This is one way we can help develop our young and upcoming players, as the chances of making the national team are slim for footballers from smaller centres.”
Oresi thanked the visitors for donating the jerseys and equipment for the league to use next season.
