Youth group keeps town clean

WHILE everyone else in Northern is in lockdown due to the state of emergency (SOE), a handful of youths have been quietly maintaining the cleanliness of Popondetta town.
The Niugini Compound Youth in Business, headed by chairman Bonnie Yaungere, have been turning up every day to work and keeping the town clean. The group is registered with the Investment Promotion Authority and has been working under the Oro government’s urban youth initiative programme since 2018.
Yaungere said the Niugini Compound youth group recently purchased a slasher which helped them enormously and saved a lot of their time. The group thanked the Oro government for its support and urged them to purchase a vehicle to help them dispose of rubbish efficiently in Popondetta.
Governor Gary Juffa commended the youths for being responsible and taking ownership of the town.
“I am proud to support the Popondetta urban youths who have taken it upon themselves to keep Popondetta town clean and safe,” he said.
“The youth are proving that they are a great development tool rather than the impediment many consider them to be.
“They have stepped up significantly and are taking ownership of their town.”
Juffa said other youth movements would be following suit in other centres and stations throughout the province.
