YOUTHS at Mambu Market along Malahang Back Road in Lae have taken the initiative to contribute to keeping the city clean by imposing fines on those seen littering.
Litterbugs are charged a K5 on-the-spot fine.
Ten youths started the idea last month in support of Lae MP John Rosso’s drive to clean up Lae.
Leader Noel Albert said they were based at Mambu bus stop and had taken the responsibility to clean nearby drains and roads.
“We provide rubbish drums ourselves and also inform people to mind their rubbish,” he said.
“It is not a one-off thing that we are doing.
“It is something we would like to do every day to make us busy, and to keep the place free of rubbish.”
Albert said they also cleaned the market and its surroundings.
