LAW and order issues are not only police matters but everyone’s business, says a senior police officer.
East New Britain (ENB) police commander Snr Insp Joseph Tabali made the remarks during the surrender of firearms by youths from Kokopo on Friday.
Tabali praised the youths from Vunabalbal ward within the Bitapabeke area of Kokopo-Vunamami Urban local level government (KVULLG) in Kokopo in taking this initiative by surrendering their firearms to the police.
The youths surrendered the firearms at a gathering witnessed by police, Kokopo city mayor Benjamin Mesmin Murliu, Kokopo administrator John Talele and officers from the Kokopo administration.
Tabali said it was a way forward.
He said law and order problems were not solely the responsibility of the police to address but also for everyone in the community to help curb.
“What the youths of Vunabalbal have done is a first of its kind for this province,” Tabali said.
“No youths in ENB have come forward openly to surrender their guns like you have.”
Tabali said the gesture by the youths showed that they wanted their community to be law-abiding and peaceful.
