WILLIAM Yumb scored late to help Star Mountain beat Kutubu 4-3 in round 16 of the Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League at Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae on Saturday.
In the earlier match of Lae’s double-header, Morobe United and defending champions Lae City settled for a 1-1 draw in the local derby.
Playing behind close doors, Star Mountain opened the scoring four minutes in through Pettyshen Elijah after good midfield play.
The game seesawed until Kutubu’s Oberth Simon equalised in the 38 minute.
After halftime, Iso Muekako scored to give Kutubu a 2-1 lead.
However, Star Mountain responded with an equaliser through Central native Tau Winnie in the 60th minute before Tarman Ramos bagged another goal to give the Port Moresby-based side a 3-2 lead six minutes later.
Refusing to go down without a fight, Kutubu re-grouped and earned themselves a direct penalty kick.
Goalkeeper Bradley Gurom made no mistake to score the equaliser.
With the intensity of the match picking up, it was anybody’s game as the clock ticked towards fulltime.
Star Mountain grabbed their chance four minutes from fulltime when an unmarked Yumb headed home the winner off a corner kick.
