The National Fisheries Authority (NFA) has earned almost half a billion kina for the country since 2008, according to Fisheries Minister Mao Zeming.

“In one way or another, it has contributed to improving the lives of our people,” Zeming said on the occasion of the ground breaking for a new tuna cannery in Lae on Monday.

In this year’s budget, K28 million of this revenue was allocated K2 million each to the 14 Maritime provinces and K3.5 million at half a million each to the seven highlands provinces.

Zeming said the allocations were made in support of the National Government’s commitment to the nation through supporting provincial and local level governments.

“Since taking office in August last year, the Government has remained committed to supporting the rural populace and effectively dedicated the national budget of K13 billion as the people’s budget.”

He said the Government had delivered on its commitment to provide free school fee education policy, improved basic health care, maintained major infrastructures, improved law and order and encouraged growth in the business sector.

“I am of the firm belief that both Majestic and Nambawan Seafood will contribute to the consistent implementation of the Government’s policies as we continue to encourage foreign direct investments for the benefit of the industry and more importantly – the people.”
