POLICE in West New Britain will not hesitate to use excessive force on criminals, warns commander Chief Inspector Alan Iara.
“This is our response to threats hurled against us.
“The threat follows the shooting of four armed robbers last month.
“One surrendered, his wounds treated, he was charged accordingly and is waiting to appear in court,” Iara added.
He said the situation had been quiet since then, but police were monitoring the situation.
“Threats were issued to police and we are not taking them lightly, especially after one of our man was shot at in Kimbe last week,” Iara said .
“My men are on full alert and will maintain patrol in the town and along the Kimbe Bialla Highway,” he added.
Iara said that since the shooting of the policeman in Kimbe, there had been no reports of unrest in the province but “we are on alert”.
Meanwhile, two suspects involved in a drug case were jailed 15 years by the district court.
Iara welcomed the sentencing, saying that such tough penalties would deter would-be criminals.
He said this was not the first time a high sentence had been given.
“Another man was jailed 14 years previously for a drug case.”
