POLICE have trained men and women in a ward in Madang to be part of a community policing unit whose task it is to support police in reducing crime.
Ward councillor Simon Sil said 14 men and six women in ward 6 were being trained by police in Madang to address criminal activities in the area.
It was an initiative of the people to eradicate crime in the ward.
The 20 unit members live in their own communities in the ward and report to their “main base” at the Riwo Elementary School.
They were trained by Madang police officers on the basics of community policing and were blessed in church after the training.
People in the ward were informed about the roles of the 20 community police unit members and urged to support them.
“I acknowledge a job well done by the unit members and police in keeping the festive season quiet,” Sil said.
