POLICE are appealing to the public to report anyone making and selling homemade firearms, Manus commander Chief Inspector David Yapu says.
“A 22-year-old man, of mixed Manus-East New Britain parentage, was arrested for having a homemade firearm and a single-rifle 5.56 cartridge.
“Rayson Tommy was found with the firearm and ammunition in ward four, Lorengau Town,” he added.
Insp Yapu said Tommy was allegedly threatening and terrorising the community who then reported the matter to police.
“We responded swiftly and he appears in court today,” he said.
“Homemade firearms are used by youths for robbery.
“The public should help police get rid of public threats by reporting to us those manufacturing and selling homemade firearms and ammunition,” he added.
Meanwhile, over the years, there had been incidents of youths on the island using homemade guns to hold up people to rob them of their belongings.
Insp Yapu had said even the robberies in Lorengau involves homemade guns and manufacturing and selling of it was a concern for the province.
