9-Mile comp helping youths

A COMMUNITY leader is running a volleyball competition to keep youths occupied and help them refrain from drugs, alcohol and other bad habits in Port Moresby.
The youths – spread across 16 teams – returned to action over the weekend with the Kukipi Volleyball competition restart.
Coordinator Betty Ken-Savo said the competition had tipped off earlier this year but was postponed indefinitely due to the nationwide Covid-19 state of emergency.
“I work closely with a lot of mothers in our community but I’ve noticed that the youths here don’t have anyone to support or organise them,” she said.
“So I decided to establish the competition to keep them occupied over the weekends.
“I’ve got some boys in our community to help me run the competition.
“We will be running matches until October.
“So far, the youths’ reaction has been great.
“I feel that it is important to change their attitude.”
