AFL Papua New Guinea and Port Moresby have praised the support of corporate sector in recognising the sport in Papua New Guinea.
This is the way forward for the corporate sector to have confidence in AFL and other sports in PNG.
Ahead of the recent national championships in Kimbe, West New Britain, AFL Port Moresby approached Vitis Industries Limited to pay for the airfares of its travelling contingent.
Managing director Vicky Mosin said her company accepted AFL Port Moresby’s request.
“We will continue to be partners and give our support to promote and market our products in AFL,” she said. “We are here to stay as a locally-owned company and deliver on our community obligation as the company grows.” As a token of appreciation, AFLPNG and Port Moresby presented the silverware, which the contingent won at the championships, to Mosin on Friday.
AFLPNG commissioner Professor Kenneth Sumbuk said that AFL was the only sport that had won three international events unlikely other codes in the country. “This was fruitful as Port Moresby AFL men’s teams played in the grand final and it was a rewarding to win the AFLPNG Cup and trophy,” he said.
Sumbuk said PNG beat Ireland and New Zealand in 2008, 2014 and 2017.
“This corporate support for AFL Port Moresby means a lot and it will encourage footballers to achieve better results in the future,” he said.
AFL Port Moresby president Douglas Lai thanked Mosin for her company’s support.
“We won the men’s division with two of our sides playing in the final. The sponsorship indicates a lot of confidence in our teams,” he said.
“This is helping raise the bar in AFL and also for the players to improve their standards.”
