These police houses at Umi barracks in Morobe were once used by the Highway Patrol Unit but abandoned some years ago.
Until now, a retired policeman is still occupying one house and is looking after the property.
Another house is being used by a policeman attached to Umi police station.
The facilities there are rundown. However, Provincial Police Commander Superintendant Alex N’Drasal said the houses would be repaired for use by a 20-man police unit to be based there and patrol part of the Okuk Highway.
