Airports corporation makes Covid-19 testing compulsory for workers

CORONAVIRUS (Covid-19) testing is compulsory to the 700-plus employees of the National Airports Corporation (NAC), says acting managing director and chief executive officer Rex Kiponge.
“As frontline workers, it’s very important that our employees protect themselves, their co-workers and families and the travelling public,” he said. “We acknowledge that this approach (compulsory testing) will require regular testing from time to time, however we believe it’s an important step in encouraging our employees to be vigilant and to make important personal health choices rather than forcing them directly into taking the vaccine,” Kiponge said. In the past two weeks, the NAC allowed all employees time-off during work hours to get a Covid-19 test.
A clinic was set up at the head office in Port Moresby for those who wanted to get vaccinated too.
“The response has been excellent so far with over 35 employees getting vaccinated,” he said.
He said NAC continued to supply hand-sanitisers and face masks to everyone.
Meanwhile, the 22 airports around the country remain operational for flights unless directed by the pandemic controller to close down.
Kiponge said normal operations were maintained by rostered staff.
“As we approach the travel peak period, we will particularly be very strict in enforcing the mandatory wearing of face masks and hand-sanitising in all airport terminals,” he said.
“Social distancing at the airport during the peak period is not very practical and is always a challenge,” he said.
