Albert keeping fit for season with Dragons

PAPUA New Guinea international Elsie Albert says she is eyeing a strong campaign with the St George Illawara Dragons in the upcoming National Rugby League Women’s season in Australia.
The PNG Orchids captain told The National last week that she would not be joining the Souths Logan Magpies in the Queensland Rugby League’s BHP Premiership.
However, she said she would do her own training while awaiting a call-up from the Saints.
“I will not be playing in the BHP premiership in Queensland because it is a short season,” Albert said.
“It’s only seven rounds and given the lengthy processes in travelling down due to Covid-19, it is not possible so I stayed back.
“But I am confident and hoping to re-join the Dragons for the upcoming season.
“The Dragons have given me a training programme to do while I’m here (in Port Moresby), so that’s what I’ll be doing to maintain my fitness.
“If don’t play any games in the lead-up to the season, I think I will still be ready.”
The 24-year-old said she was open to playing in the Port Moresby Rugby Football League, should the competition be given clearance to kick off its 2021 season.
“I would love to play in the local league,” Albert said.
“It will be good to get some match fitness which will be helpful in terms of my preparations for the new season.”
