Another earthquake

Letters

THE recent 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck parts of Southern Highlands, Western Highlands and Hela is another unfortunate catastrophic event, following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake in February.
It is alarming to read in the newspapers about tribal fights, and rows over school positions as is the case with Ialibu Secondary School .
The Ialibu incident has resulted in the loss of an innocent life, others seriously hurt and dormitories burnt to ashes.
Riots in Tari town are ongoing.
The hospital in Tari is damaged due to the recent seismic activities. It has depleted resources with limited professional staff available, but is still opening its doors to help people in need.
Here you not only have victims of the disaster, but people wounded from tribal fights and riots, which are placing additional unnecessary stress on the limited resources available.
I also condemn the attack on two Unicef officers on Saturday in Nipa.
The two workers were involved in the earthquake relief work and were attacked while on their job.
What picture are we portraying here?
Why do we have to attack someone who is here to help us?
The communities must work together to apprehend those culprits and subject them to the rule of law.
Let’s be open-minded and think critically, especially during these crucial times.
Perhaps the ongoing seismic activities in these parts of the region call for a complete change in attitude as a solution to all these ills.
