Apec should bring unity

Letters

CONGRATULATIONS to the Government and everyone who participated in the successful hosting of the Apec Leaders’ Summit in Port Moresby last week.
On the same token, thank you China, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, United States and other countries who assisted in the preparation for the hosting of the event. Your kind help and understanding to see the event staged successfully has created history for PNG.
Apec was an eye-opener for many people, including the critics, because of the kinds of benefits it brings to our economy.
Despite the different opinions raised before to the event, what unfolded during Apec demonstrates a completely new outlook – revealing phenomenal economic opportunities we never thought of.
Our country has signed or entered into both fresh agreements or expanded on existing trade and economic arrangements to expand our economic outlook into the future.
The Apec meeting has changed our regional economic position and consolidated Papua New Guinea as an emerging regional economy. And under the leadership of Peter O’Neill, the PNG economy is growing stronger.
The Government defiance against a very strong Opposition that opposed Government borrowings to upgrade and expand key enabling sovereign infrastructures has demonstrated that we have a government that is not only visionary but full of wisdom.
O’Neill’s hard work and never-say-die spirit amid an opposition hell bent to dethrone him shows why he is an extraordinary prime minister.
His hard work and insistence that this country is bigger than what previous governments think, and his hard stand to open up the country to liberate its full economic potential is now taking shape. And Apec is the icing on the cake because when all the trade and economic agreements PNG
entered into with the Apec economies are realised, our economy will soar.
It is now time to support political stability as we exploit Apec spoils to enhance the country.
