South Korean ambassador Kymgu Kang has called on taekwondo participants and enthusiasts to attend the 7th Korean Ambassador’s Cup at Caritas Technical Secondary School in Port Moresby tomorrow.
Kymgu said participants would have a chance to be among other taekwondo athletes around the world to visit the birthplace of the sport, Korea.
“For the last seven years, many athletes from Papua New Guinea have participated in this event. We expect around 80 athletes participating,” he said.
“We will film the performance of the players, we will send the films to Korea and they will evaluate and assess the level of their performance.
“If they show a certain level of performance in taekwondo, they might be invited to Korea but that is up to their performance.”
He acknowledged that although taekwondo was a martial art, it was also a means of self-control and discipline for people who wished to take up the sport.
“Taekwondo is not only for physical strength but also for the spiritual side,” Kymgu said.
“Taekwondo is merely for self-discipline and for a peace loving spirit.
“Any sport can be a bridge between two people. In the next 10 years, I would like to see taekwondo flourished in this country.
“Through taekwondo, we can share very good catalysts of the Korean and Papua New Guinean cultures.
“Taekwondo will enable us (PNG and Korea) to find common ground as human beings, you can also get a gist of the Korean culture.”
Henry Ori, Bobby Roko Willi, Steven Tommy, Maximillian Salvator Kassman (2016 Rio Olympics participant) visited Korea in March to train and study with taekwondo instructors.
