NATIONAL women’s cricket team (Lewas) captain Kaia Arua has expressed sadness over women who suffer from violence in Papua New Guinea.
During the launch of the Cricket for Good programme earlier this month, she said some incidents were avoidable as she urged the public to refrain from violence.
“It (violence) really hurt most of the women in the team,” Arua said.
“As a national player, you have to be disciplined to avoid situations that could get out of hand.
“As a female cricketer, you have to prioritise your life with constructive activities in the community.
“With the news about violence against women in the media lately, it is incredibly sad.”
She urged children to stay away from negative influences in their communities by keeping themselves occupied with constructive activities such as cricket.
“If you have a dream, you work on it and you have to work hard in cricket,” Arua said.
“If you are not educated or didn’t do well in school, you can make a name for yourself in cricket or any other sport.
“To come out into the communities and interact with people who are still new to the game is exciting.
