FOUR members of the national athletics team will travel to Brisbane, Australia, tomorrow for specialised training in preparation for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Marianas.
Athletics Papua New Guinea president Tony Green confirmed with The National that Pacific sprint champion Toea Wisil had left for Brisbane earlier this month.
The four athletes joining Wisil are multi-event athletes Karo Iga and Edna Boafob as well as Eldan Toti (jumps) and Daniel Baul (hurdles).
“They are heading to the Gold Coast to train under head coach Brett Green and other specialist coaches to prepare for the Games,” Green said.
“Toea left early this month for Brisbane.
“Her coach Geoffrey Bai was supposed to go with her, but he is still in Goroka and I understand he is going soon.
“Olympian Rellie Kaputin is still in Port Moresby and we are aiming to (send her to Australia) next week.”
When announcing the 27-member athletics team earlier this month, Green said plans were in place for PNG-based athletes with a small number of development squad members to attend the Oceania Championships which would be held in Mackay, Queensland, from June 7-9.
