LAST year’s grandfinalists Waghi Tumbe say they remain upbeat despite Sunday’s 8-16 loss to Gulf Isou in the opening round of the Digicel Cup at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
Tumbe coach Baundo Aba said after the game that his men would need to improve on a few areas.
“It’s only round one, we are disappointed to start the season with a loss, but we remain positive about the rest of the season,” the former SP Hunters forward said.
“I believe we are still serious contenders for the title after reaching the grand final last year.
“We just need to fix certain parts of our game and we should do well for the rest of the season.
“There are a few transitions happening with some new players who have joined us, and it will be a challenge. But I am sure we will build combinations for our next game.
“The loss should be a learning curve for some of the players and I know they will look to improve.
“I am happy they fought hard till the end.”
Aba said his men would need to improve on their defence which was one of their weaknesses.
He thanked their supporters for attending their opening match.
“The weather wasn’t fine as it rained before the match,” Aba said.
“But I am happy that we have very passionate city supporters.”
