Aust uni helping make study affordable

Education

JAMES Cook University is offering affordable degree programmes in partnership with the International Training Institute.
The partnership was launched with International Marketing Manager Tara Taylor introducing the benefits to students at the institute, last week in Port Moresby.
“This is an excellent pathway for Papua New Guinean students,” Taylor said.
“A lot of times overseas education can be quite expensive,” she said.
The partnership started last December and it has created a pathway for diploma students with credits into JCU.
The normal degree programme at JCU is $84,000 which is approximately K209,923.
With the partnership students can enrol at the University paying half the amount of the normal bachelor tuition fee with the acceptation of eight transferred subjects.
Upon completing eight transferred subjects at ITI, students with credits will enrol directly at JCU regardless of their diploma programmes.
They will then start with only 16 subjects to do at JCU in which they would have completed two years of bachelor’s study after taking credits for their diploma.
Paying below half the normal tuition fee, students can get a quality education with a trimester scholarship that offers a $1000 discount (about K2500).
With this scholarship, students are required to pass a Grade Point Average (GPA) of seven or six and a half to be eligible for a discount on scholarship.
With the trimester scholarships, students can even pay below the required amount of the fees payable.
“We are happy with this partnership as we want to build our relationship,” ITI managing director Sentheyval Kumaran said.
“They have excellent scholarship and I’m happy and I think it will work well for the future.”
Taylor used to live in PNG where she became fond of the people she worked with. She also looked after PNG students at the University in Brisbane, Australia.
She has worked in Korea and Canada and has a background in education.
She is happy to be helping create this opportunity for PNG.
