THE National Youth Development Authority (NYDA) is partnering with four districts in Hela and Southern Highlands to help youths change their mindsets and look forward for a brighter future.
NYDA has partnered with Hela’s Tari-Pori, Komo-Margarima and Koroba-Kopiago and Southern Highlands’ Imbonggu administrations to see what can be done to ensure youths in those districts have positive attitudes and mindsets for a better society.
NYDA and the districts sponsored more than 30 youths from Hela and Imbonggu to attend a 10-day training on life skills, youth leadership and basic literacy training at the Highlands Regional Youth Training Centre in Banz, Jiwaka.
The training ended on Friday with the presentation of certificates.
Participant and Tari-Pori district youth chairman Henry Tambiawi said youths today faced many challenges.
He said the training would help him return to his district and start programmes and activities to empower the youths.
“Youths are key people and I thank the National Youth Development Authority and the district administrations for allowing us to undergo this training,” he said.
Director of Highlands Regional Youth Training Centre Michael Boro said they offered basic computing for free to help the participants.
He said the training was important because it would give youths skills to to make them useful members of their communities and districts.
NYDA director general Joe Itaki thanked the Government for addressing the importance of youths.
Itakai said the purpose of helping the youths was because they would be the country’s workforce in the coming years.

  • Thank you NYDA and the DDAs in Hela and Southern Highlands for the initiative. We have 4 categories of Youth in the country: 1. Youth in school from Primary to University and Colleges taken care of by the Education Department and the DHER&T;
    2. Out of school Youth is very problematic caught between parents, TVET, informal sector, short skills training providers, informal education;
    3. Disengaged Youth are talented, very dangerous, under stress and equipped to do anything good or bad to survive from the villages, urban settlements, towns and cities.
    4. Youth in formal & Informal employment mostly taken care of by themselves, their employers and we as clients and the business communities.

    Our problem now is to equip and engage these disengaged Youth so there is peace in communities, reduction in crime, involved in meaningful activities supporting communities, parents and the Government on developments taking place in all levels of Government systems.

  • youths are gaining increasing awareness of who they are and came to recognise their potential and knowledge and skilling in developing their community and the nation as a whole. the national youth development authority is in the right direction of assisting rural youths to develop their skills and knowledge. this will enable them to change their behaviour and become good citizens.
