Banning plastic bags

Letters

I AM writing in regard to the controlling and banning of plastic bags.
The Government wants to impose a complete ban on plastic bags because of the threat to marine resources.
However, this law will not be effective as 90 per cent of goods are packed in plastic.
That means it shall still be a threat to us and the environment.
Thus, wisdom in engineering and science is applicable now to ponder and proactively manage plastic waste.
Like other waste, plastics including plastics containers, plastic bags and other plastic packages account for almost 70 per cent of municipal garbage.
We need more innovation in science to improve our plastic waste management.
Hence, plastics can be categorised into two groups according to their chemical structure as thermosets plastics and thermoplastics.
In general, thermoplastics can be recycled because they can be melted unlike thermosets that cannot be melted.
Most thermoplastics can be recycled into somewhat more-demanding applications.
Despite much contemplation from the Government to reduce plastics waste, science and engineering can be very creative and useful.
It means that plastics can be recycled and make life easier for people, government and plastic manufacturers.
